Our Story
When my son was born with autism, my world changed and Sensory Direct was born
Ethan had been prescribed different forms of medication, and although
they helped a little, I didn’t want to become reliant upon them, so
Ethan’s Paediatric Consultant suggested a Weighted Blanket. I remember
hearing this and thinking ‘what on earth is a Weighted Blanket’? At this
stage I was blissfully unaware of how life changing that Weighted
Blanket would become.
Frequently Asked Question
What is a sensory sock body sock?
A sensory sock, also known as a body sock, is a stretchy, full-body garment designed to provide sensory input, compression, and a calming effect for individuals with sensory processing disorders, autism, ADHD, or other special needs. It wraps around the body like a sock, offering deep pressure and proprioceptive input that helps improve body awareness and self-regulation.
How does a sensory sock work?
The sensory sock works by providing gentle, consistent compression to the body, which helps stimulate the proprioceptive system (the sense of where your body is in space). This pressure has a calming effect and can reduce anxiety, help with focus, and promote relaxation. It can also be used to improve coordination and motor planning.
Who can benefit from using a sensory sock body sock?
Sensory socks are beneficial for children and adults with sensory processing disorders, autism, ADHD, anxiety, and other conditions where sensory input is needed. They can also be helpful for anyone who seeks comfort, relaxation, or stress relief through deep pressure stimulation.
Can a sensory sock be used for self-regulation?
Yes! The sensory sock is often used as a tool for self-regulation. By providing deep pressure, it helps individuals calm down when feeling overstimulated, anxious, or overwhelmed. It can also help them focus during tasks by reducing distractions.
How do you use a sensory sock body sock?
To use a sensory sock, the wearer steps into it and pulls it over their body, ensuring it fits snugly around their torso, arms, and legs. It is typically worn while sitting or lying down, but some individuals may use it while engaging in movement or play. The sock can be worn for short or long periods depending on the individual’s preferences and needs.
Is a sensory sock safe to use?
Yes, sensory socks are generally safe when used correctly. They are designed to provide gentle pressure without being too tight or restrictive. However, it’s important to monitor the wearer to ensure they are comfortable and not experiencing discomfort or overheating. Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for use.
Are sensory socks adjustable?
Most sensory socks are made from stretchy, breathable fabric, which allows for some level of flexibility and adjustability. However, some models may come in different sizes to ensure the right fit. Some may have adjustable features, like zippers or Velcro straps, to increase comfort and fit.
How do you care for a sensory sock?
Caring for a sensory sock is simple. Most are machine washable, but it’s important to follow the care instructions on the label to avoid damage. Typically, you should wash the sock in cold water and air dry or tumble dry on low heat to maintain its elasticity and quality.
